Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair HousingNAR also rolled out an implicit bias training video in 2020, which will be followed in 2021 with a three-hour classroom course on interrupting implicit bias in real estate. The mind science experts at the Perception Institute present this online workshop to help members avoid implicit bias in their daily business interactions. Drawing upon the latest evidence-based research, Perception explains how our brains' automatic, instant association of stereotypes with particular groups can cause us to treat those who are different from us unfairly, despite our best intentions and often without our conscious awareness. Perception then applies these concepts to the everyday work of REALTORS®, and offers strategies to override bias in order to convey respect, ensure fairness, and improve business relationships. So out of continued concern for the wellbeing of our members, the Board has put a continued hold on planning live networking events and large in-person gatherings. This includes among other things, our golf outings and the Timber Rattlers fundraiser. Hello, everyone, and welcome to Fair Housing Month! Although the federal Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, the recent Newsday investigation of real estate practices on Long Island clearly shows that we still have a long way to go before equal opportunity in housing is achieved. We can try to say, "Oh, that's Long Island; we don't have those problems here", but the reality is that discrimination in housing remains ubiquitous. Volumes have been written on this topic, but all I'm going to say here is please be sure to provide equal service to all potential purchasers, without regard to any protected class status. It's the moral thing to do, it's the ethical thing to do, it's the legal thing to do; in every way, it's the right thing to do. And, it will strengthen your business in every way, too! Enjoy the warmer weather and have a good month!
Fair housing is more than a list of dos and don'ts, rights and penalties, and mandatory continuing education. As stewards of the right to own, use and transfer private property, fair housing protects our livelihood and business as REALTORS® and depends on a free, open market that embraces equal opportunity.
